Djamila Sahraoui was born in Algeria in 1950. Having studied literature in Algiers, Djamila Sahraoui obtained a diploma in film direction and editing at IDHEC. She also won awards from the Villa Médicis Hors les Murs. She directed several documentaries, awarded in different festivals, as well as her first feature film "Barakat!" (2006) which was awarded 11 prices in multiple festivals such as Dubai, Cairo, Milan and Fespaco... With her second feature, "Yema" (2012, meaning "My mother", in Arabic) - under development since 2008 formerly with the title "Ouardia Once had Sons" - Djamila won the FIPRESCI Award at Dubai FilmFest 2012. She stars in as Ouardia.

جميلة صحراوي ولدت بالجزائر سنة 1950، درست الأدب قبل أن تلتحق بباريس للحصول على شهادة في الإخراج والتركيب من معهد الدراسات العليا السينمائية، أخرجت العديد من الأفلام الوثائقية، قبل أن تنتقل إلى إنتاج الأفلام الطويلة سنة 2006 بفيلم "بركات" الذي حصد جوائز عربية وعالمية عديدة."يما" هو فيلمها الطويل الثاني، وهو من كتابتها وإخراجها، فضلا عن توليها الدور الرئيسي فيه
